"The Old Man's Garden" - 19

had a stroke, as more tests attest, so am  on blood thinners for awhile, and having physical therapy for a couple  weeks to help regain muscle control... and am back to painting... as such, finished the gravel part of the background to left of the floral rock, and be on to the same on the right side, coming to where the ground rises to the foreground level...

AND actually did more -

Wednesday, November 13, 2019

"The Old Man's Garden" - 11

into the foreground stippling of gravel, which is taking seemingly forever to cover the area...

it is hard on my damaged wrist, actually, as am having to turn the hand more left/vertical to achieve the angle needed (besides which am much more used to laying the hand/arm on the drafting table instead of holding all upright on the vertical)...

Sunday, November 10, 2019

"The Old Man's Garden" - 10

moving along... slow, because am not used to holding the brush to work on an easel, as used to hold brushes and pens on a sloping drafting table by resting the arm on the table... so is taking a bit of time to adjust to the once used form from long ago...

"The Old Man's Garden" - 4

One of the things I am finding in trying to finish an old work, especially back in the early stages of my development of themescaping, is fully grasping the concept and its many visualizations that fulfill possibilities... in this case, it seems the initial understanding was far too simplified for such a scale as this mural of "The Old Man's Garden"... in consequence, the intervening years, having gained more understanding of the process of structuring a painting to more fully express the theme involved, am having to alter a number of areas in this work - which is good, with the end result being a work more coherent in expressing the visualization of the theme/title... to begin with, the 'valley' between the left foreground and the right area with the tree will be eliminated, the drop off to the left of the tree also eliminated, and a set of buildings will be erected in the place, along with more gardening - in this way both sides will be joined in unison instead of what amounts to two separate paintings... while is true I could take the time to go thru my old files, my journal papers, to see if wrote anything regarding the specifics of this work, even possibly why abandoned it, I think this approach will be more fruitful... so now I need to develop those visualizations and fill them in after wiping out the old areas... why those areas in the first place? I suspect it was painting on the fly as it were, intuitively, instead of cogitating it more thoughtfully, especially since the whole of it was from imagination....

"The Old Man's Garden" -WIP

have rediscovered an unfinished work of mine from the years probably early 90s, called "The Old Man's Garden", with several figures lightly grisailled, one penciled, and the one of the old man yet to be entered... originally thought the tree was too domineering and, because of other events in my life, just dropped further work on it... now, having a fresh, as it were, look at it, have decided to complete it, needing only the man figure to sketch out and insert, then finish the grisaille, and then glaze the colors all over... 4'x8', acrylic on canvas -
